Secretary Sh. C. K. Mishra recognize Indian SMEs with the potential to avoid 40 million tonnes of GHG emissions

Two Indian SMEs with innovative cleantech solutions were awarded the winners of the sixth edition of WWF-India’s Climate Solver Awards held on 8th October 2018 in Delhi. Awarded by the Chief Guest, Sh. C. K. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Govt. of India, the two ventures – Carbon Masters India Pvt. Ltd. and Chakr Innovation Pvt. Ltd. have been conferred with the Climate Solver awards under the GHG Reduction category and have the potential to, together, substantially reduce GHG emissions, by 40 million tonnes by 2027, if implemented globally, whilst also addressing the critical environmental issues being faced in the country pertaining to air pollution and waste management. With this year’s edition, the number of Indian entrepreneurs on the Climate Solver Platform stands at 19 among the 107 honoured so far globally.

Carbon Masters India Private Limited was recognized for its innovative take on managing organic waste by collecting and converting the waste into clean fuel. Carbon Masters collects the waste generated in their bio-CNG trucks from various bulk waste generating establishments, and treats the waste anaerobically to produce methane gas and organic slurry. The gas is compressed and bottled to form Carbonlites which is used as a substitute to LPG for cooking and as fuel in vehicles, while the slurry is treated to produce organic manure which is used as a replacement to chemical fertilizers. Right from collection of segregated waste till the production of Carbonlites and organic manure, Carbon Masters ensures that it collects the organic waste using bio-CNG trucks and manages it to produce clean fuel through a 360-degree waste management approach.

Chakr Innovation was awarded for its technology to improve air quality with climate change co-benefits. Chakr Shield which is a retrofit solution that captures up to 90% Particulate Matter (PM) from Diesel Generator(DG) thereby reducing the black carbon emissions to the atmosphere and improving the quality of air. The device is installed over the exhaust pipe of the DG that captures the exhaust and cools it to cause agglomeration of the soot particles. These soot particles, which primarily consist of PM, are collected as raw material for making inks and paints for use in merchandise.

The award event was followed by the launch of the Climate Solver Hub, a virtual interactive platform to bring together the key stakeholders of the clean energy ecosystem- innovators, corporates and the investors. The hub is an exclusive platform for the Climate Solver innovators in India with an objective to strengthen the climate innovation entrepreneurial ecosystem. The Hub aims to create a platform for innovators to showcase their technology, and network with potential investors, as well as for investors and corporates to discover, finance and adopt innovations by SMEs in the clean energy space. If this works well it can be a pilot ahead of a global hub or marketplace where we create an ecosystem around high impact innovations.    

Speaking at the event, Mr. Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO, WWF-India, said, “The Climate Solver platform showcases innovative climate solutions emerging from the SME sector from across different regions of the country. While these solutions have potential to reduce global GHG emissions, they also address key local environmental challenges. These awards, together with the launch of the climate solver virtual platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration amongst different stakeholders, will help in strengthening and broad-basing the cleantech ecosystem in the country.”

In his address, Sh. C. K. Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Govt. of India said, “India is a crucial player in the journey to combat climate change and SMEs play a critical role in it. However, global learning and local solutions are the key with solutions emerging from within the country itself. It is imperative to reward and encourage SMEs, and for the government to create a conducive ecosystem to help them scale up. The narrative is to work together towards development and ecology conservation for which the government and industry must work in collaboration.”

Leader of the Climate solver programme Mr Stefan Henningsson highlighted four things in his remark: the new IPCC 1.5 report and the Exponential Climate Action Roadmap (proof points from Climate Solver used in this) both show that a first halving of global emissions is necessary and feasible by approximately 2030. The new 2-year collaboration with Mission Innovation, Climate-KIC, Carbon Trust, Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE), Clean Energy International Incubation Centre in India and Swedish Energy Agency, on a framework for assessing avoided emissions in order to accelerate high impact innovation that was launched the same day - CII-ITC Centre of Excellence or Sustainable Development is one of the strategic partners. And the first global Climate & Energy Accelerator guidebook - Accelerate This with support from WWF, World Bank, Asia Development Bank and UK Aid that now is ready to download from Amazon - lead by New Energy Nexus and includes input from Sangam Ventures, Infuse Ventures as well as another 70+ accelerators from around the world.   

Climate Solver partners in India are the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), New Ventures India, Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (IIM Ahmedabad), Indian Angel Network, National Innovation Foundation and Technology Development Board (Department of Science and Technology, Government of India).

Five Climate Solver honorees coming to Mission Innovation in Malmö

A tap to put on your fosset that can save up to 98% of the water and an Electric Vehicle charging as real estate service. A fully automatic room level service for stable and more economic heating. An innovation that makes wind propulsion for large ships and another one that makes electricity from low grade industrial waste heat.  These are the honorees of Climate Solver Nordic this year, which marks the 10th year the award is handed out – and they join a family of more than a hundred innovations from across the world that have been assessed for climate impact potential and honoured.

For the first time, a majority of the five awarded Nordic companies are Finnish and the rest Swedish. The awards will be given out on May 22nd next week, by the Nordic Ministers of Energy, when the world of energy and climate change innovation will gather in the Öresund region for the 9th Clean Energy Ministerial meeting, as well as the 3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial conference and Nordic Clean Energy summit this week.

One of the goals with the Climate Solver initiative is to look for transformative technologies and business models that can disrupt the ‘business as usual’ approach. Small, incremental changes will not be enough to fulfil the Paris agreement; we need innovations with high impact potential to commercialise fast in order to reach a net zero emission economy fast enough. The five honorees this year are great examples of what is needed to make profound changes.

According to WWF estimates, just these five innovations from Sweden and Finland have a potential to reduce CO2 emissions globally by more than 100 million tons each year in ten years – which is almost as much as these two countries emit together within their country boundaries.

All these five honorees show high ratings om climate impact performance. One of the awarded companies for example, is Altered for the tap that saves up to 98 percent of the water.

Twelve Nordic Startups on a Mission Innovation journey to combat climate change

One innovation that can give support wind to more than 25 000 Cargo vessels. A new concept for less driving by finding empty parking slots through sensor technology and a way to save energy through collecting the warm air from restaurant kitchens. These are some of the twelve Nordic innovations that have just reached the market and are nominated for being WWF Climate Solver Honorees 2018 on the journey to Malmö and one of this years largest events on climate change, energy & innovation.

We must acknowledge and be inspired that already existing innovations like these can have a major impact on combating climate change whilst their market expansion could generate export revenues and growth. If the world chooses to invest in innovations like these for exponential growth of jobs, turnover and revenue whilst greenhouse gas emissions are avoided at scale and less water use & air pollution come as warmly welcomed co-benefits as we advance towards a more circular economy. If we act. And let's all push for and expect that this years Talanoa Dialogue leads to higher climate ambitions from countries as well as across all sectors of society. 

So who are they? The 12 are applying a combination of digitalization, engineering and systems thinking into new business models within heavy emitting sectors such as transport, buildings, food and industrial manufacturing. Innovations with large energy and resource savings potential across sectors are dominating this year. Energy and resource efficiencies across economies are known to give the fastest and largest greenhouse gas savings. So the twelve nominated companies in the Nordic countries are:

As the world of energy and climate change innovation will gather in the the Öresund region 21-25 May for the 9th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9), the 3rd Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-3) and Nordic Clean Energy Week - - WWF will take the 5 of these with largest impact potential with us. It is a natural fit as these forums are distinct in character and content but they share a common goal with WWF values: Accelerating the clean energy revolution. Energy Ministers from more than 20 countries (and the European Union) – that account for about 90 percent of global clean energy investments and 75 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions - gather to discuss the future of energy, investment needs, innovation programmes and systems as well as research & development that can help us solve climate change challenges. This also makes it an impactful gathering so please join us.

From WWF we have specifically partnered with Mission Innovation, European Commission, Swedish Energy Agency, BAND, ALMI Invest and City of Malmö around the Cleantech Capital Day to be run at Malmö Live – same venue as the Minister meetings – 22-23 May – see We will host a Climate Solver & Finance event with the five Climate Solver Nordics and foresee dialogue and forging of new partnerships around accelerating climate change innovations like these onto global markets. This will be a great chance for our new Climate Solver Nordic honorees to join the now 100 Climate Solver innovations from around the world and present their innovations for a number of international decision makers.

So how did we find the 12 nominated finalists? We partnered with Nordic Cleantech Open again this year to tap into a large number of amazing Nordic startups – 116 of them this year to be precise. They were screened by a large number of investors and experts in the jury in order to find the once with a great team, excellent technology and big market potential. These were the NCO Top 25 for this year. From Climate Solver we also invited startups of such quality that they have been a NCO Top25 company over previous three years. From this cohort we have just now selected those 12 innovations and outstanding entrepreneurs with an early stage commercial offer that look set to have the largest climate impact potential over the coming 10 years. Now we are in detail assessing the level of avoided emissions that these innovations can bring over the coming 10 years if they grow and take significant market shares. So to be honoured Climate Solver a great innovation is not enough you must also be verified by WWF on climate impact performance to be among the biggest in the startup community at the moment. This is an obvious practice for us but still now after the Paris Agreement a different practice from the large majority of other innovation challenges we see – including some of those on climate change.

We do this through the Climate Solver Tool and assessment framework that we have now used for more than 250 innovations over the last 10 years. We are encouraged to see a few others starting to take up this important practice from a climate change perspective and we encourage all of you innovation portfolio managers to adopt a practice like this. Or do you already know how to maximise the climate positive value from your innovation portfolio? Tools are there to be used. And Mission Innovation is working on and has the opportunity to launch a framework for avoided emissions from innovation as well. WWF strongly encourages Energy Ministers to adopt such a framework as part of the future Mission Innovation initiative and where sustainable, high climate impact innovations can continually be at the core of the initiative. Seize your power! The urgency in the climate challenge means it really is time for speeding up the change by faster commercialization and scaling of a range of high impact innovations we already have at hand.    

And not only Ministers are in the driving seat to seize their power here. We need more corporates, investors, cities and countries act responsibly by setting science based targets on tackling climate change and act to implement those in order to create an increased demand for impactful innovations like these. In addition these large players must act as test beds and venture partners with our most impactful entrepreneurs. And engage in innovation across their own value-chains towards full decarbonisation. Or else these impactful innovations, like on Climate Solver, just remain beacons of climate hope on a sinking Titanic as we have acted too little, too late. The growth of solutions is unfortunately far too slow at present compared to the rule of thumb of halving global emissions every decade pace that science tell us is needed. We need exponential growth of solutions to tackle this challenge. And this is already happening with mainstream solar PV as well as wind power for example but we must broaden this to other technology areas. 

The large number and quality of Nordic start-up entries again this year reaffirms the WWF analysis that clearly shows how the Nordic region already is strong in nurturing a vast number of cleantech innovation startups (GDP related) compared to other world economies, see Global Cleantech Innovation Index 2017. WWF thinks it is time for the Nordics to also be an important hub in scaling up climate innovations by connecting high impact startups with the growing number of climate action committed corporates, cities and investors in the region and outside – this emerging ecosystem present a huge opportunity. The Nordics have some prerequisites for  becoming a true Silicon Valley of sustainable innovation but must be much better at taking these to scale and global markets in order to tap into some exponential growth opportunities. It is time to grasp that opportunity.

Actions and innovations strengthen our confidence in a low carbon future

As the Eight Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), and the Second Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-2) were hosted in Beijing, WWF were among the organizers of a side event called ‘A Future Powered by Renewable Energy--Action and Innovation’. Here are some event highlights.

Despite the uncertainty created by Trump’s announced withdrawal from the Paris agreement, the governments, businesses, cities and NGOs at the event showed strong confidence in a clean, low-carbon future, and proposed a variety of innovative solutions.

Among these were Anna Lindstedt, Swedish Ambassador to China, who affirmed the constructive role of China in the Paris Agreement, also saying that Sweden and the European Union still hold a strong determination in fighting climate change.

Li Junfeng, a renowned expert in renewable energy sector in China, spoke of the country’s declining coal consumption since 2011 with a 6% drop during last year. Concluding also that new energy forms in China will mainly be renewable and non-fossil in the near future.

Wang Sicheng, Senior Researcher, Energy Research Institute, National Development and Reform Commission pointed to the fact that both the country and the local governments have made policies to strongly support renewable energy. In the "13th Five-Year" national energy planning China set the solar power target as high as 110GW by 2020. Of these 60GW is from distributed photovoltaic (PV) power generation.

Sir David King, formerly UK Foreign Secretary’s Special Representative on Climate Change, emphasized the importance of the Paris Agreement, and spoke of Mission Innovation (MI), an initiative jointly launched by 22 countries to provide opportunities for the private sector. He clarified that the purpose of MI is to launch more public investment in renewable energy and to reduce the risk of the private sector.


7 cases of commercialized low carbon innovations from China celebrated

During the event we also awarded five new Climate Solvers companies from China.

The awarded technologies and companies are:

- Intelligent Solar Tracking System Technology. Developed by: Huangshan Runsol New Energy

- Castor value chain productions. Developed by: Tianjin Castor Energy

- Winding Permanent-magnetic Coupling Variable Speed Drive in Motor System. Developed by: Jiangsu Magnet Valley Technology

- Intelligent Heating and Cooling Technology for Building. Developed by: Henan Runheng Energy Management

- Producing Cold-rolled Ribbed Steel Bar. Developed by: Anyang Heli Techtronic Metallurgy New Technology

If these companies reach their targeted market share by 2026, they could achieve more than 180 million tons of carbon dioxide emission reductions per year.

There were also two Climate Solver special awards to Yuedun Domes and Mobike, respectively.

During the side event, as one of the important results, WWF hosted a three-day exhibition in China National Convention Center. This exhibition showed several WWF Climate Solver awarded technologies and services.

All in all the side event restored our faith in the low-carbon future. We also expect to see more and more exciting actions and innovations from governments, cities, corporates, and enterprises all around the world for a future powered by renewable. Let’s meet up at CEM 9 in 2018.  




Is your country up to innovation speed in a changing climate?

Global biodiversity is declining at an alarming rate, putting the survival of other species and our own future at risk. Living Planet Index reveals that we could witness a two-thirds decline in global populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles in the half-century from 1970 to 2020 – unless we act now to reform our food and energy systems and meet global commitments on addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and supporting sustainable development.

The earth’s climate is changing and disrupting a number of natural systems on which we all depend. Predicted effects of a temperature increases above 2°C to include more extreme weather events, sea level rises, precipitation changes, disappearing coral reefs, ocean acidification, eroded food security, prolonged poverty traps and forced migration of thousands of species including humans. International climate change negotiations delivered a turning point in 2015 at COP21 in Paris. All the world’s countries agreed for the first time the shared objective of “Holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2 °C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change”. In reality this means that the world agreed in a pace of change over coming 30 years to half greenhouse gas emissions every decade as well as reaching a sustainable and fossil fuel free energy system.

But let’s be clear - national climate action plans are not yet delivering near sufficiently to reach these globally agreed targets, which make accelerated investments in solutions by business, financial institutions, countries and cities even more crucial. And these investments must go well beyond only scaling solar PV, wind power and LED light bulbs, important areas of renewable power & efficiency where we do witness promising, exciting trends of necessary exponential change today. But we need investments to go into technologies and business models such as buildings efficiency, advanced materials for greater resource/material efficiency & substitution, low & zero carbon manufacturing, digitalization, renewable heating & cooling for cities & industries, recycling, energy storage, low carbon food options, avoidance of food waste, zero emission transport options, sustainable marine, geothermal and bioenergy applications as well as negative emissions to some degree. A broader range of climate innovation areas that we continuously highlight from around the world in the Climate Solver and partner programmes. And this is the broader spectrum of cleantech that we capture entrepreneur and investment data from in the Global Cleantech Innovation index. We use a broad set of data distributed over 15 indicators and 21 metrics for shifting entire economies from high-carbon towards 100% circular and renewable economies with innovation and start-up creation being central. And from WWF we do this in order to see how entrepreneurship and innovation systems can be improved to tackle some of the sustainability challenges mentioned above.

Because most solutions exist already and can be enacted with the right combination of political, social and financial will. But the major innovation challenges ahead include the acceleration and exponential growth of business models and technologies that take solutions to market by adding value to customers and lowering costs. We must deliver energy services in much more innovative and smarter ways in a future circular economy based on decentralised, efficient sustainable energy use rather than the current centralised, inefficient unsustainable energy use.  

And all countries display strengths & weaknesses on this journey which is well captured by the index. And all countries can do their homework at home in order to deliver contributions on achieving the Paris Agreement objectives also through increased innovation, exports, revenue creation and exports to other countries in the new climate economy. Some examples - If all countries relative to GDP:

- spend the same on Cleantech R&D that Norway does we will roughly quadruple global Cleantech R&D

- become as active investors as US Venture Capitalists 2014 – 2016 in Energy Efficiency we will see well more than 10 times higher early-stage investments in this crucial area for economic growth as well as climate change mitigation

- start industrialising cleantech for exports like China we will see a doubling of cleantech exports globally

- produce as many Environment-Related Patents as Japan we will see more than a a global tripling

- would be as attractive to new renewable energy investments like India, China, Germany and US have been over the last few years we would see a very strong global investment increase

If we combine these strengths and all aim to improve we have a path towards a solution where we act both locally and globally. Whilst we must all think globally. Agencies, governments, investors and business need to proactively collaborate as forces for change in transitioning towards a sustainable energy future on a global level and at the pace of halving emissions every decade. Together we must help enterprises with pieces to the 100% circular and renewable energy future puzzle to grow more rapidly.
